Amsterdam 2011 Manikins

There aren’t many Dutch words that translate into general English and French usage, but manikin (mannikin/mannequin) is one.  It’s from the mid 16 century word mannekijn–little man.  Dutch manikins have caught my eye the last few visits, these with a touch of red on their lips.

PIKE PLACE MARKET 2011

Over the past few weeks took over 1100 photos at the Market.  Picked my favorite black/white and color to post.  Looking at them I realize it’s not a tourist post card view of the place…counting on this being a good thing.

Amsterdam Bike Club

abc-books

Used the Blurb application to create and print an Amsterdam Bike Club prototype book.  This post includes some single image two page spreads.

Amsterdam is a city in motion.  It’s almost impossible to take a photo there that doesn’t have a bicycle in it.

abc-3

There sheer physical presence is extraordinary to the visitor, ordinary and unremarkable to the residents.

abc-4

What does this mobility and its means look and feel like?

abc-5

The Amsterdam Bike Club is a photography project created to answer this question. These photos are the first efforts, from the fall of 2009 and 2010.

abc-6

Amsterdam’s bikes are its sculptures and statues, and simultaneously, like blurred figures racing around a video game.

They are jet black mostly, set in background shades of sepia.

3×3 inch photos

Have been using these lately to create a “story board” effect for photos on a theme, or of a place…separating the color from black/white.  These of the Pike Place Market:Pike-Place-Market-color-squares _3103274
